Brittleness

Parts crack easily under impact or show reduced strength, often from molecular-weight loss or material issues.

◆ Common Causes

  • •Molecular-weight loss from over-drying or overheating (thermal degradation)
  • •Excessive regrind ratio
  • •Hydrolysis from moisture (PA, PC, PET)
  • •Contamination with incompatible resin
  • •Low melt/mold temperature (poor weld or interlayer fusion)

◆ Solutions

  • ✓Optimize drying (avoid over-drying)
  • ✓Reduce regrind ratio; increase virgin resin
  • ✓Dry hydrolysis-prone resins to spec
  • ✓Purge thoroughly and inspect material
  • ✓Raise melt/mold temperature; review weld-line placement

◆ Resin-Specific Notes

PC

Hydrolytic embrittlement. Dry at 120°C; re-drying mandatory.

PA

Sensitive to both moisture and over-drying. Dry to spec.

PET

Strong hydrolysis. Low-moisture drying essential.
